Behavior Specialist Paraprofessional (1.0 FTE)

Augsburg Fairview Academy seeks to hire one Behavior Specialist Paraprofessional in Special Education for the remainder of the 2017-2018 school year.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Experience implementing student behavior interventions
  • Knowledge of student behaviors and management skills relating to individual and small groups of students
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with both adults and students
  • Demonstrated creativity, flexibility, and extreme patience
  • Ability and willingness to collaborate with teachers and other colleagues
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational and communication skills
  • Understanding and belief in Augsburg Fairview Academy’s unique mission and vision


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Minnesota Special Education teaching license (or ability to obtain such) or
  • Educational Assistant certification (or ability to obtain such)
  • Keen expertise in pedagogical best practices
  • Experience collaborating with students, families, and diverse communities
  • Track record of success serving youth with significant developmental risk factors
  • Training and experience with Circle of Courage, including RAP and LSCI
  • Work experience in an urban, charter high school


Essential Job Functions of this Position (but not limited to):

  • Implementing behavior plans customized and personalized for students
  • Perform general data collection tasks for the purpose of progress monitoring student success and reporting data to supervisors
  • The ability and passion to work with students with emotional/behavior disabilities is essential
  • Comfortable working with students in individual, small group, and large group environments and manage behaviors effectively
  • Work effectively with an interdisciplinary team and have the ability to work independently
  • Work with school staff to provide behavior support to students in collaboration with teachers
  • Participate in and provide information for team meetings related to student success and next actions
  • Cultivating strong, positive relationships with students
  • Assist students to eliminate or replace disruptive, harmful or negative behaviors using a PBIS model
  • Work in a classroom setting to observe challenging or disruptive behaviors and use data to develop positive behavior interventions
  • Working with students, teachers, and student support team to address challenges to students’ behavior
  • Collaborating with teachers to provide positive behavior interventions for students based on the Academy’s principles of authoritative instruction
  • Participating in professional development activities


Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Continually required to talk, hear, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, reach for objects, stand, push, pull, lift and use hands to grasp and feel
  • Continually required to communicate effectively with teachers, administrators, support staff, students and parents/guardians
  • Continually required to operate a walkie talkie, computer and software/applications such as Google Drive, MS Office Products and PowerSchool
  • Occasionally required to lift/push/carry and move items up to 50 pounds or more
  • Occasionally required to be available for out of school activities such as family nights, academic conferences, graduation, and student recruitment/retention activities


Job Specifications:

  • 40 hours per week minimum
  • 5 days per week, Monday – Friday
  • Salary/wages based on qualifications and the AFA salary schedule
