LEAD IN WATER SAFETY PROGRAM

PURPOSE

Augsburg Fairview Academy (AFA) is committed to providing a safe and healthy learning and working environment for all students and staff. We recognize the importance of protecting our school community from potential lead exposure and have developed a Lead in Water Safety Program to support compliance with Minnesota Statutes, section 121A.335, and guidance from the Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota Department of Education.

Minnesota law requires public schools and charter schools to test water sources used for drinking or food preparation at least once every five years. AFA’s program is based on the state’s current technical guidance for reducing lead in drinking water in schools.

Because AFA operates in a leased facility, we work with the building owner and property manager to coordinate fixture identification, testing, maintenance, remediation, and retesting. AFA is responsible for maintaining records, communicating results, updating this webpage, and completing required state reporting.

AFA reviews its Lead in Water Safety Program annually and updates it as needed. If there is a conflict between AFA’s program and applicable state requirements, the State of Minnesota’s requirements will take precedence.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of AFA’s Lead in Water Safety Program is to provide lead-safe drinking-water sources throughout the school facility.

Any fixture used for drinking, cooking, or food preparation that tests at or above 5 parts per billion (ppb) must be immediately removed from consumption use. The fixture may not be returned to service until corrective action has been completed and retesting confirms a result below 5 ppb.
