Dear AFA Community:

Halloween is right around the corner. As we prepare, I want to share a few expectations to ensure that all AFA Halloween activities are safe, respectful, inclusive, and enjoyable for everyone.

Please review the attached Halloween Costume Guidelines. These expectations apply to all AFA Halloween activities, including the school day and our family events.

A few important reminders:

  • No weapons or weapon-like props, including toy or imitation weapons.
  • Avoid graphic violence or excessive gore in costumes.
  • Costumes should allow everyone to participate safely in school and event activities.
  • Costume masks may be worn during designated activities but must be removed when requested by staff for safety or identification. Health, religious, and disability-related accommodations will be respected.
  • Culture and identity are not costumes. Costumes should not mock, stereotype, or appropriate another person’s race, ethnicity, religion, or cultural identity.

We also encourage students and families to think about an important question: “How does the power of stereotypes play into your costume?”

At AFA, we value creativity, individuality, and self-expression. We also believe that the choices we make should reflect care and respect for the people around us. Halloween is a great opportunity to practice both!

If you have questions about whether a costume is appropriate, please reach out ahead of time. We’re happy to help.

Thank you for helping us create a school community where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and valued. Let’s have some fun, get creative, and make this a great Halloween for everyone! 🎃
